Whether you’re making the switch from eyeglasses to contacts or just getting started with eyewear in general, you are probably feeling a little anxious about your contact lens fitting. Our team at Bandera Eye Care put together a guide of what to expect to help ease your mind.

Eye Exam

If you haven’t had an eye exam within the last year or you have noticed changes in your vision, you’ll need to start with a comprehensive eye exam. This is essential, as it not only helps our optometrist determine the prescription you need, but also helps detect issues like cataracts and glaucoma. It also tells our eye doctor if contacts are a good choice for you.

Discussion

Contacts come in many forms, including daily, weekly, and monthly wear, as well as colored contact lenses. Our optometrist will discuss these options with you so that you can make the best decision for your needs and preferences.

Measurements and Evaluations

Our optometry specialist will measure your corneal curvature, your pupil size, and your iris size to get the right fit with your contacts. Finally, a tear film evaluation will ensure your eyes make enough tears to keep your eyes lubricated while wearing contacts.

Prescription and Trial

After all of these steps are completed, you’ll receive a trial pair of contacts. Your optometrist will ensure the fit is right, that they are comfortable, and that there are no other issues. If everything is good, your contact lenses will be ordered.

Guidance

If you’ve been worried you won’t know how to put contacts in or take care of them, you can take a breath. You’ll receive instructions on all of this and more before you are set loose to manage them on your own. Feel free to ask any questions.

Follow-Up

In most cases, you’ll be given a follow-up appointment. This is a simple check-in to make sure that your eyes are adjusting and that you’re not dealing with any dryness or discomfort. When you first begin wearing your contacts, you might have many questions that you didn’t know to ask before. Write these questions down so you can ask them at your follow-up visit.
